Many care leavers have spent their formative years focusing on surviving their childhood rather than preparing for adulthood. With little opportunity to take decisions for themselves and without access to activities that build skills, knowledge and confidence they naturally struggle to live independently from as early as 16 years.

Through your donation young people are supported to develop knowledge, skills and confidence that better prepares them for independent living. They develop friendships and relationships that provide a sense of ‘family’ that they often don’t experience. By being fully involved in the project they experience decision making that develops ownership and responsibility combined with skills and knowledge about how to manage a home.

Young people tell us that:

‘’It is a starting point for a brilliant future… everyone is family and they support each other… they teach life skills to be able to be independent and move into your own place... there’s so many other things that come with having a tenancy, like being an adult and stuff like that… It has helped me so much, I can speak more, I’m not bottling it up… the best thing about this House Project was, we did the best activities… it’s putting warmth around the process of leaving care"

Your Legacy

Your gift, their future

After providing for your loved ones, a gift to NHP is another way of showing how much you care - because small or large, your gift will help to improve opportunities, health and wellbeing for young people leaving care across the UK.

Legacy gifts are from people who want to support young care leavers after recognising the care and support they need to make their way in life.

It is important that we ensure funds are used where the need is greatest and we work closely with project staff and young people to fund things that will have the biggest impact on health and wellbeing.

You can enable this by allowing your gift to be used wherever the need is greatest.

Why leave a gift in your will?

Whilst lots of young people do well in care many don’t. Even when young people have been well cared for and supported, they are often ill prepared for living alone when they leave care.

Moving to independence from 16 and living alone as a care leaver is daunting. Doing this without the support of close family and at a much earlier age than the general population (average age of leaving home is 24) does not work for many. They have described to us their loneliness, fear and the feeling that they have been ‘dropped off a cliff.’

That’s where NHP comes in.

A gift in your will gives us the security we need to plan for the future, helps us to always be there for young people leaving care and gives care leavers the security they need too. Even small gifts make a massive difference to care leavers living alone and trying to make a way in life.

Your support will make a real difference to the life chances of some of the most vulnerable young people in our community.

How to leave a legacy?

When making or updating your will, you just need to let your solicitor know your intentions. There is no obligation to let us know, but if you can this helps us to plan for the future.
